The client was one of the leading GPS providers and had products market all around the world. The client was approached by one of its competitor’s for making royalty payments against the patented technology used by two of the client’s products. It was important for the client to understand if the claims made by its competitor were valid and the extent of overlap that may have existed between the product and the patented technology.

Focused and extensive search on patent and non-patent literature databases was conducted for identifying the relevant prior art that existed for the ten patents. The shortlisted patent and non-patent literature were analyzed in detail to establish prior-art. This analysis revealed that the client’s products were not infringing eight of the ten patents. The two seemingly relevant patents were used to conduct claims overlap analysis with the technology features of the product which also resulted in no overlap. This gave immense confidence to the client in its technology.

It also revealed to the client possible opportunities in the technology transfer area. The team identified possible licensing partners for the client.

The client found the overall analysis extremely useful – It saved millions of dollars for the client in royalty and gave further ideas for innovation in the technology space. Regular Quarterly updates became a key support for the client in this domain.
